4 Ways to Prevent Dirty Ducts

If you suffer from allergies or asthma, your dirty ductwork could be contributing to the problem. Most of us rarely, if ever, think about the quality of air that’s coming out of our vents. But when considering the constant buildup of dust, pet dander and other airborne pollutants that exist inside of a home and HVAC unit, it’s easy to see how ductwork can become so polluted over time.

Fortunately, there are several steps that you can take to prevent the buildup of dust and allergens in your ductwork. Cleaner ducts will not only dramatically improve the quality of the indoor air, but also help your HVAC unit to run more efficiently.

  1. Schedule routine HVAC maintenance. A regularly scheduled maintenance plan with a Pearson HVAC professional can prevent a great number of issues, including dirty ductwork. It’s recommended that a Pearson HVAC technician runs an annual checkup to ensure your unit operates at optimum capacity year round. Our certified technicians will inspect and replace your air filter, if needed, to make sure the least amount of pollution gets through to your ducts.
  2. Protect ductwork during renovations/remodeling. Anyone that’s gone through a major home improvement project knows that it isn’t complete without a heap of dust. Saw dust and other particles get kicked up and may be sucked in through your ductwork if not sealed properly. No matter if you’ve hired a contractor or it’s a do-it-yourself project, make sure that all nearby ducts are sealed. When renovations are complete, it’s a good idea to wait a week, then replace your HVAC air filter. This will allow the filter to catch any dirt and debris leftover from the renovation before installing a new one.
  3. Keep your home clean. Getting rid of dust before it becomes airborne is a key component of preventing dirty ductwork. Regular vacuuming, dusting and deep cleaning will remove any dust and dirt that would otherwise travel into your ductwork and recirculate throughout your home. Vacuums with HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters are ideal as the filters don’t allow dust particles to escape through the vacuum exhaust. If you have pets, take extra care to vacuum any hair that gets into corners or fabrics around your home.
  4. Check for mold. Mold particles are present throughout our indoor air at nearly all times, but it doesn’t start to become a problem until it settles. Take a look around the walls and floorboards of your home, specifically rooms where moisture gathers like the bathroom or kitchen. If you spot a cluster of mold, make sure to thoroughly clean the area with a mold killing substance such as bleach, vinegar or hydrogen peroxide. The buildup of mold can lead to the constant release of spores that will travel through ductwork and quicker lead to the accumulation of dirt and dust. To prevent mold buildup in the future, try to create more ventilation and remove moisture from rooms where moisture is known to accumulate.
