SOME NEW WAYS TO HELP YOU AND YOUR CAR SURVIVE THE LONG COLD WINTER

When the weather outside is frightful, be prepared for winter car woes.  Winter weather provides unique challenges to test our sanity and driving skills.  Let’s look at some ideas that may be new to you that should reduce or eliminate some of the hassles that you face.

FROZEN DOOR KEYHOLE

Heat your metal key with a lighter for a few seconds, then push through the ice OR use a straw and blow on the lock to melt the ice OR use hand sanitizer to quickly thaw the ice.

FROZEN WINDSHIELD AND WIPERS

Split the seam on a trash bag and stretch it across your windshield, tucking each end into the car door to block your windshield and wipers from snow and ice OR spray with a mixture of vinegar and water (3:1) OR park your car facing east so the rising sun can help clear your window.  For wipers only, keep them in the air and cover each with a sock to prevent them from freezing to your window.  NEVER USE HOT WATER TO MELT ICE ON YOUR WINDOWS – the temperature difference can cause your windshield to crack.

DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE MIRRORS

Put gallon sized plastic bags over the mirrors at night to prevent them from freezing over.  Use rubber bands to secure the bags.

FOG PROOF THE INSIDE OF YOUR CAR

Shaving cream has a lot of the same ingredients as commercial de-foggers.  Just spray a layer on the inside of your windows and wipe it clean OR leave a sock filled with kitty litter in your car overnight to absorb moisture and odors.  FOR INCREASED BACK TIRE TRACTION – keep the kitty litter bag (20 LB+) in your trunk.

STUCK IN THE SNOW

Place your car’s foot mats below the tires to increase traction OR use some of the kitty litter under the tires.

TO KEEP DOORS FROM FREEZING SHUT

Spray cooking spray (like PAM) on the rubber edges of your car doors and rub them down with a paper towel

FOR SHOVELING SNOW

Spray some non-stick cooking spray (like PAM) on your shovel to make the snow glide off during shoveling.

KEEP ON HAND IN YOUR CAR

Stash a duffel bag behind the front seat (not in the trunk) stocked with the following essentials:

Blanket – one for each person

Snow brush with ice scraper

Hand and foot warmers

Tire inflation product (like Fix-A-Flat)
