SAVE MONEY, STAY WARM BY NOT MAKING THESE HEATING MISTAKES

Temps in the 40’s overnight, needed a jacket this AM – looks like the cooler/cold weather is coming. This is nothing new to us – happens every year, but maybe this year we all can enjoy the comfort of a warm, cozy home and save money by avoiding some typical costly mistakes.

NEGLECTING/SKIPPING ANNUAL FURNACE MAINTENANCE
Prevent big problems by catching them early. Most no heat service calls can be traced back to lack of regular maintenance. Plus, it seems many service calls occur at worst possible times – either when it is super cold or late at night. Treat your furnace as you do yourself (check ups) and your car (oil changes). Save money by having it work at maximum efficiency. Don’t forget to change out the filter for proper clean airflow.

IMPROPERLY ADJUSTING THE THERMOSTAT SETTINGS TO EXTREME HIGHS OR LOWS
The thermostat does not work like the accelerator in your car. The furnace puts out the same amount of heat, no matter at what temp you set the thermostat. Set the stat at your normal setting and be patient. To save energy and money, turn the stat up just a couple of degrees at a time and see how it feels after the furnace shuts off. If you need it warmer, then move it up a couple more degrees until your comfort level is reached. For more savings, set the temp back at night, but not an excessive number of degrees.

HEATING AN EMPTY HOUSE
While at work or school or on vacation, turn the stat down five degrees from your typical comfort setting. Equipment will work less and its lifespan will be increased. Not only are programmable stats available to assist you in this endeavor, but we now have smart phones. Install a stat that can be controlled remotely through an app and be in charge of your home’s temp and save yourself some money.

OTHER COMMON MISTAKES
• Closing vents in unused rooms – no money saved and your heating system may become unbalanced and not work properly
• Keeping windows unlocked or not latched – the warm air escapes to the outside
• Leaving curtains (especially on the south side) closed on sunny days – the sun cannot help heat your home for free and the furnace does not get a break
