The holidays are here. You may have multiple guests over for dinner or a large Christmas party. Out of town family or friends may be taking over part of your space for an extended period of time. With all that you need to do, it is hard to remember to check and see that your house is in proper condition to deal with the winter weather. You certainly do not need a disaster and you want your guests to remember your gathering as a hassle free pleasant visit.
Know your home’s plumbing system – familiarize yourself with the water shut offs’ location. In addition to each room’s plumbing, find the main water shut off in your home.
Hot water shortage – extra people means more showers. You want to make sure they all get a nice warm one. Ensure that the setting on your water heater is at 125 degrees.
Put trash in its place – be sure to have a trash can in each bathroom. This will help your guests from disposing of items improperly (like putting tissues and cotton swabs in the toilet).
Overflowing toilets – stuff happens. Keep a plunger close by.
Check your water connections - make sure the washer and dryer are functioning properly. Check water hoses and connections. If the hoses are old looking or cracked, replace them with new and maybe consider some of the stronger burst proof hoses.
Garbage disposal overload – holidays equals more people equals more food. Do not misuse the disposal by putting in grease, oil, fats, vegetables, potatoes, pasta, coffee grounds or large bones. Always run plenty of cold water to assist in the movement of items through the pipes. Throw any large amounts of scraps or leftovers in the garbage rather than the disposal.
Clogged kitchen sinks – even if you use your disposal correctly, just putting more items down the kitchen sink increases the chances of a clog. Be smart and save yourself time and money.
Frozen pipes – when the temperature drops real low, your pipes, especially the ones on outside walls, can be subjected to very cold conditions and freezing may occur. Take proper steps to guard against this potentially costly occurrence. Lack of water may be a hassle, but frozen pipes that burst can very quickly cause severe damage to your home.
